Варгас и „жълтата заплаха"
Същност и причини за антияпонските настроения в Бразилия преди Втората световна война

Епохата на Варгас е един от най-трудните периоди за японската общност в Бразилия. Всъщност Бразилия не прави изключение от останалите страни в Западното полукълбо, заляти от пропагандата на „жълтата опасност“ и антияпонското законодателство преди Втората световна война. Повърхностно е обаче да се смята, че Бразилия просто следва „тенденциите“ в региона, наложени от Съединените щати и следвани от съседите ѝ в Южна Америка. Ескалацията на антияпонските настроения се коренят не само в установения антидемократичен националистически режим, поставящ чужденците в неизгодно положение. Тази статия ще се опита да допринесе за разбирането на характера и причините за антияпонските настроения в Бразилия, като допълни съществуващата историография с анализ на фактори като расистката и ксенофобска основа, на която стъпва Варгас, и цялостната му визия за развитието на страната, негативните последици от Голямата депресия, сблъсъка на бразилския и японския национализъм. Основната цел на изследването е да обясни дали антиимигрантските мерки, въведени през 30-те години на ХХ век, се ограничават до управлението на Варгас, дали са насочени конкретно към японските имигранти, дали се коренят само в политическата пропаганда, или имат сериозни основания.
